Many overseas weddings hit by XL collapse

Many couples planning to get married abroad have been hit by the collapse of XL as planes have been grounded and the cost of replacement fights has shot up (which is disgraceful behaviour from the other airlines).  Those who have booked a package holiday will at least have renumeration as they are protected by ATOL, but there is still the stress of having to rearrange flights and change plans at the last minute.  Spare a thought though for those who have booked their flights separately (most likely in order to save money), as they have no protection unless they paid using their credit card.  If they have accomodation and receptions booked abroad there will be no renumeration for them since the hotel or venue will say that they are providing the service still, and it is not their fault that the couple cannot get there.

If you are planning to marry abroad it would be advisable to follow a few rules to ensure that you are not left out of pocket.

-Book a package deal if you can so that you are protected by ATOL.

-If you don’t want to book a package deal, then pay using a credit card so that you can claim the money back should anything happen as cash and debit card transactions are not covered.

-It’s also advisable to make sure that you have enough credit available on your credit card when you are away so that should anything happen whilst abroad, you can at least book flights home again.

-Check out reviews of cheap airlines, it will give you a good indication of the sort of service you can expect and it will help you to make an informed decision and if it’s worth taking a risk.

-Check your travel insurance, many do not cover companies going bust.
